In most Bangalore flats the balcony doubles as the drying area, and a floor stand quickly takes it over. A ceiling cloth hanger moves the washing up out of the way. Choosing one is mostly about four questions.
1. Ceiling or wall-mounted?
A pulley ceiling hanger gives the most drying space and keeps everything overhead, but it needs a solid RCC slab to fix into. Many newer apartments have a false ceiling or a service duct above the utility balcony — in that case a wall-mounted cloth hanger, with rods on brackets anchored into the wall, is the right answer.
2. How many rods?
Ceiling models usually come with 6 or 8 rods. A family of three or four doing a load most days is usually well served by 6; larger families, or homes that dry bedsheets and towels often, tend to prefer 8.
3. Which length — 4, 6 or 8 ft?
Measure the width of the ceiling where the hanger will go and choose the longest rod that fits with room to work the pulleys and ropes. Longer rods mean more drying space per rod.
4. What the rods and brackets are made of
Choose stainless-steel rods. Painted or chrome-plated rods look fine in the shop but rust in humid weather and can leave marks on wet clothes. Just as important is the fixing: brackets should go into the concrete slab or solid wall on anchor fasteners, never into plaster, because a hanger carries a full wet load every day.
