For decades the answer to an unsafe balcony was a welded mild-steel (MS) grill: a heavy frame of bars bolted across the opening. It works — but it also turns the balcony into a cage, blocks the view and needs repainting. Invisible grills do the same job with thin stainless-steel cables. Here is how the two compare for a typical Bangalore apartment.
Safety
Both can be safe when fitted properly. An invisible grill uses cables tensioned individually and set 2 inches apart, anchored into the slab or beam, so a child cannot squeeze through, and — fitted vertically — there are no horizontal bars to climb. An MS grill’s horizontal members, by contrast, can act as a ladder for a determined toddler.
View, light and air
This is where invisible grills win clearly. There is no frame across the middle of the opening, so from a few steps inside the room you see the view, not the grill. Light and breeze pass straight through. An MS grill noticeably darkens a room and interrupts the outlook — which matters when the view is a big part of why you bought the flat.
Rust and maintenance
MS grills rust, especially where rainwater collects, and need scraping and repainting every few years. SS 316 invisible grills with a nylon coating do not rust in Bangalore’s monsoon and need no painting. The only occasional maintenance is re-tensioning a cable, which can be done on a service visit.
How the building looks
Many gated communities in Bangalore restrict changes to the building’s exterior. Welded grills visibly change the façade; invisible grills are barely visible from the ground. That is one reason associations are generally more comfortable approving them.
Cost
An invisible grill can cost more upfront than a basic MS grill. Over the life of the balcony, though, there is no repainting, no rust repair and no replacement of corroded sections, so the long-run difference is smaller than the first quote suggests.
The verdict
If you want the balcony safe for children, pets and elderly parents while keeping it open, bright and good-looking, invisible grills are the better choice for most Bangalore homes. If you are replacing an old MS grill, the new tracks should be fixed into sound concrete rather than the old, rust-damaged holes — something to ask about when you get a quote.
